We’re already into 2023, which means there will be many new television series and seasons to keep us occupied in the new year. But before we all get fixated on something shiny and new, you might want to catch up on these wonderful shows.
Netflix’s Dead to Me
It’s no secret that streaming services are taking over, so it seems fitting that Netflix’s original series Dead to Me is at the top of the list. Dead to Me’s creator, Liz Feldman, has delicately crafted a world featuring one of the most authentic and relatable portrayals of friendship on television. The two beautifully flawed protagonists, Jen and Judy (played by Christina Applegate & Linda Cardellini), both come to the pilot with a lot of baggage, which is unpacked in hilarious and wonderfully messy ways over the course of three seasons. While it’s difficult to predict anything in this twisty, crime-infused dark comedy, it’s safe to assume that no one could predict where these best friends ultimately end up in the series finale.
The Old Man on Disney+
Back in October 2022, this new series became an instant hit. Available for streaming on Disney+, The Old Man sees actor Jeff Bridges join the likes of Liam Neeson and Bob Odenkirk among the ranks of golden-ager heroes. This action-packed series follows former CIA agent Dan Chase (Bridges) on the run and is based on Thomas Perry’s 2017 bestseller of the same name. Eventually, the sins of the past catch up with him, and for Dan, that means shady government-sanctioned spy stuff in foreign lands. The audience is quick to learn that no matter how much evidence is destroyed, memories remain and grudges hold firm.
Everyone’s Talking About Grace and Frankie
If you haven’t already given Grace and Frankie a watch, it’s another series that is high on the list. The show got its start back in 2015, and the final season of Netflix’s longest-running original series was released in the Spring of 2022. At the center of this story are two women and unlikely friends (played by Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin) who must adjust to their new reality after their husbands drop a lifestyle-altering bombshell on their families. Grace and Frankie highlights the fact that life will continue throwing curve balls at you, even in its final years. Fonda and Tomlin’s lines in this series are sharp as ever, and the writers don’t shy away from bold and risky topics. If you’re searching for a unique show filled with laughs, move this one to the top of your watch list.
The Silly Murder Mystery, Only Murders in the Building
The final show on the list is a favorite of many, Only Murders in the Building. If you didn’t already know, this show is about three residents of a building on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, their love for true crime, and their tendency to snoop a little too far. The trio includes a former television actor named Charles Haden-Savage (Steve Martin), a theater director named Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and an artist named Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez). While the bunch may seem like an odd match, this is exactly what gives the show its charm. After bonding over their shared love of true-crime podcasts, the characters decide to get into podcasting themselves by attempting to solve a real-life murder mystery in their building. Robust with a cozy atmosphere and riddled with cliffhangers, this is the perfect winter watch.
All in all, there are so many good TV shows right now, and 2022 certainly didn’t let us down regarding entertainment.
